Cologne vies for title of Germany's gayest city

“Two gin and tonics please,” I say loudly to make myself heard over the pounding music coming from the dancefloor right behind me.

“Noch mal?” the bartender asks, looking slightly confused.

“Gin and tonic. Two. Please.” I am almost shouting the words, and for good measure am leaning halfway across the counter so my mouth is only inches from the bartender’s right ear.

Europe’s 2010 Capital of Culture is...an industrial region. Yes, you heard right, but there are very few industrial regions in the world like the Ruhr, one of Germany’s most interesting areas and a perfect, yet surprising, winner of these cultural honors. The area is full of museums, but here, the museums are as likely to be about the region’s industrial heritage as its artistic one, and the buildings of significance range from coal mines to abandoned breweries to the unique Gasometer (a former gas tank used to power local mills). Industry is what drove this region, and even now, as the smokestacks stop belching forth their emissions and the skies clear, it is industry that remains the unique story the Ruhr region has to tell

EXPLORING COLOGNE

If cities fall into two categories, “love at first sight” and “grow on you slowly,” Cologne is of the second type. While the cathedral—a Gothic wonder spanning six centuries of building—is immediately impressive, the city itself takes a little time to work its magic. You know it’s going to happen, though, even as you walk along with some doubts creeping into your mind. As I stroll through the modern streets of this German gay mecca, I think: “I’m going to love this city. I don’t yet, but I’m going to.”

Currywursttal és radlerrel, vagyis citromos sörrel a kezemben követem a hömpölygő tömeget Berlin egyik sugárútján, a Ku’Damm-on. A szélrózsa minden irányában extrém fazonok és kirívó jelmezek vesznek körül. Mindenkinek fülig ér a szája a boldogságtól, önfeledt párok fényképezkednek a flitteres sarut viselő kigyúrt gladiátorokkal és szexi superwoman-ek csoportjával. Egy idős párt kutyasétáltatás közben ért el a menet, a házuk előtt megállnak, kezükben a cekker, szemükben pedig a csillogás. A nagymamakorú asszony csöppet sem lepődik meg, amikor egy kamion platójáról egy szinte semmi kis alsógatyát viselő srác a karjaiba hajít egy óvszert. A néni rezzenéstelen arccal zsebre vágja a kis tasakot és egy puszit dob újdonsült udvarlójának. Willkommen in Berlin! Ez a Christopher Street Day, a melegek, leszbikusok, biszexuálisok és transzneműek rendes évi fesztiválja. A menetet a város nyíltan meleg polgármestere vezeti.
